JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD

 

1. Jesus' Father, God, is the Eternal Spirit & Creator:

A. God has always existed & always will:

                Exo.3:14  God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM

                Psa.90:2  From everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God

                Psa.102:24b-27      The heavens...shall perish, but Thou shalt endure... Thou art the same, & Thy years shall have no end

                Rev.1:8   I am Alpha & Omega, the beginning & the ending...which is, & which was, & which is to come, the Almighty

B. God is an immortal, invisible Spirit:

                Jn.4:24    God is a Spirit: they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit & in truth

                1Tim.1:17               Unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour & glory

                (See also 2Cor.3:17a; Heb.11:27.)

C. He fills the entire universe:

                2Chr.2:6  Who is able to build Him an house (temple), seeing the heaven & the Heaven of heavens cannot contain Him?

                Psa.139:7-10          Whither shall I flee from Thy presence? Thou art there

                Acts 7:48,49          Heaven is My throne, & earth is My footstool

                Acts 17:24-29        In Him we live, & move, & have our being

D. He is the only true God:

                Isa.43:10,11            I am He: before Me there was no God...neither shall there be after Me

                Isa.44:6,8b             I am the first, & the last; beside Me there is no God

                Isa.45:21b,22         There is no God else beside Me...I am God, & there is none else

E. He created the world, the universe, & man:

                Gen.1:1   In the beginning God created the heaven & the earth

                Gen.1:26,27            God created man in His Own image...male & female

                Gen.2:7   God formed man of the dust of the ground

F. His understanding & power are infinite:

                Psa.139:4                There is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, Thou knowest it altogether

                Psa.147:5                Great is our Lord...His understanding is infinite

                Isa.40:13-18           All nations before Him are as nothing...less than nothing, & vanity

                Isa.40:28b              There is no searching of His understanding

                Rom.11:33              O the depth of...the wisdom & knowledge of God!

G. God is far beyond man's limited ability to understand:

                Isa.55:8,9                As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are...My thoughts (higher) than your thoughts

H. God has a wonderful & beautiful plan for man:

                1Cor.2:9  Neither have entered into heart of man, the [wonderful] things God hath prepared for them that love Him

I. But sinful man is estranged from God:

                Rom.3:23                For all have sinned, & come short of the glory of God

                Eccl.7:20 Not a just man on earth, that...sinneth not

                Isa.59:2   Your iniquities have separated between you & your God

J. God loved man & wanted him to have salvation:

                Mat.18:14               It is not the will of (God) that one...should perish

                2Pet.3:9  The Lord is...not willing that any should perish (See also Ezk.18:23,32; 33:11.)

 

2. Why God sent Jesus into the world:

A. God sent Jesus to show us a picture of what He is like:

                Col.1:13b,15           His dear Son: Who is the image (perfect picture) of the invisible God

                Heb.1:3   The brightness of His (God's) glory, & the express (clearly communicated) image of His person

                2Cor.4:4b               Christ, Who is the image of God

B. In knowing Jesus, we can know & understand God:

                Jn.8:19    If ye had known Me, ye should have known My Father

                Jn.14:7-9 He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father

C. God showed us His love by sending Jesus to earth:

                Jn.3:16    God so loved the world, that He gave His only...Son

                Rom.5:8  God commendeth His love toward us, in that...Christ [came into the world &] died for us

                1Jn.4:8b-10            The love of God...God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him

D. Jesus showed us God's love by dying for us:

                Jn.10:11  I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep

                Jn.15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends

E. Jesus' death paid the price for our sins, & if we believe in Him, we receive God's gift of salvation:

                1Tim.1:15               Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners

                Lk.19:10  The Son of man is come to seek & to save that which was lost (See also Mat.9:13)

                Jn.3:17    God sent not His Son into the world to condemn world; but that the world through Him might be saved

                Rom.5:6-11             We were reconciled to God by the death of His Son

                1Jn.3:5    He was manifested to take away our sins

                1Jn.4:14  The Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world

                Rev.5:9b Thou wast slain, & redeemed us to God by Thy blood

3. More reasons why God sent Jesus into the world:

A. To proclaim the truth:

                Jn.18:37b                For this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth

B. To destroy the power of the devil:

                1Jn.3:8    For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil

                Heb.2:14b,15         That...He (Jesus) might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil

C. To know our human weaknesses & to sympathise with us:

                Heb.2:16-18           Made like unto His brethren...in that He himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succour them

                Heb.4:15 (He was) touched with the feeling of our infirmities: Lk.2:40 (growing up); Lk.4:2 (hunger); Lk.8:23 (need for sleep); Lk.9:58 (poverty); Jn.4:6,7 (weariness & thirst); Mat.26:37 (sorrow).

 

4. Jesus' teachings & personal example:

A. Jesus' teachings were with power & authority:

                Lk.4:32    They were astonished at His doctrine: for His word was with power (See also Mat.7:28,29 )

                Jn.7:46    Never man spake like this man

B. Jesus' message was love:

                Mat.22:37-39         Thou shalt love the Lord..thou shalt love thy neighbour

                Jn.13:34,35             A new commandment I give you, That ye love one another

                Jn.15:12  Love one another, as I have loved you

C. Jesus' humility:

                Phi.2:5-8 (He) made Himself of no reputation, & took...the form of a servant...humbled Himself

                Mat.11:29               Learn of Me; for I am meek & lowly in heart

                Lk.22:27  I am among you as He that serveth

                Jn.13:3-15               [Jesus' humble example of washing His disciples' feet]

D. He befriended & won sinners & outcasts of society:

                Mat.9:9-13             Jesus sat at meat (ate with) many publicans & sinners Lk.7:36-48 [Jesus confounded a Pharisee by allowing a sinful woman to touch, wash & kiss His feet as He was eating]

                Lk.19:2-10              [Jesus ate with & forgave a despised tax collector]

                Lk.23:39-43            [Jesus forgave the penitent thief dying with Him]

                Jn.8:1-11 [Jesus forgave the woman caught in adultery]

 

5. Jesus, the way to salvation:

A. Jesus is the only way to God:

                Jn.1:29    The Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world

                Jn.14:6    I am the way, the truth,& the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me

                Acts 4:12               Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name...whereby we must be saved

                1Tim.2:5 One mediator between God & men, Christ Jesus

                1Jn.5:11  God hath given to us eternal life, & this life is in His Son

                (See also Jn.8:51; 10:7-9; 17:2,3.)

B. Jesus has the power to give us eternal life:

                Jn.5:26    As the Father hath life in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself

                Jn.1:4      In Him was life; & the life was the light of men

                Jn.3:16    Whosoever believeth in Him...have everlasting life

                Jn.5:24    He that believeth hath everlasting life, &...is passed from death unto life

                Jn.6:40    Every one which...believeth on Him (has) everlasting life

                Jn.6:47    He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life

                Jn.6:48,50,51          I am the living bread...if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever

                Jn.10:28  I give unto them eternal life; & they shall never perish

                Jn.11:25  I am the resurrection, & the life

                Jn.17:2,3 This is life eternal, that they might know...Jesus Christ

                Rom.6:23                The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ

                Heb.5:9   He (Jesus) became the author of eternal salvation

                1Jn.5:12,13             He that hath the Son hath life...you that believe on the name of the Son of God...have eternal life

C. When we receive Jesus, God dwells in our hearts:

                1Jn.4:15  Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, & he in God (See also Jn.13:20b)

D. God's sheep will hear Jesus' voice & come to Him:

                Jn.5:23    All men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father

                Jn.6:45    Every man that...learned of the Father, cometh unto Me

                Jn.8:42    If God were your Father, ye would love Me (Jesus)

                Jn.10:3,5,27            My sheep hear My voice...& they follow Me

E. God loves us if we love Jesus:

                Jn.14:21,23             He that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father

                Jn.16:27  The Father Himself loveth you, because ye loved Me

F. Those that hate Jesus, also hate God:

                Jn.15:23,24             He that hateth Me (Jesus) hateth My Father also...now have they both seen & hated both Me & My Father

G. What rejecting Jesus means:

                Jn.3:36b  He that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him

                Jn.3:18    He that believeth not (on Jesus) is condemned already

                Jn.3:19,20               This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, & men loved darkness rather than light

                Jn.8:24    If ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins

                Jn.12:48  He that rejecteth Me...hath one that judgeth him : the Word...shall judge him in the last day

                1Jn.2:22,23             Whosoever denieth the Son...hath not the Father

                1Jn.5:12b                He that hath not the Son of God hath not life

 

6. Jesus, the light of the world:

A. Jesus is the true Light:

                Jn.1:9      That was that true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world

                Jn.8:12    I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness (See also Jn.9:5)

                Mat.4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light...in the region & shadow of death light is sprung up

                Lk.2:30-32              A light to lighten the (nations) (See also Isa.49:6)

                1Jn.2:8    The darkness is past, & the true light now shineth

                (See also Acts 26:18)

B. The devil & evil men hate the true Light:

                (See 2Cor.4:4; Jn.1:5; 3:19-21.)

 

7. Jesus' life & resurrection are a fact:

A. The facts of His life & death were recorded by eyewitnesses:

                2Pet.1:16                We have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we [told of the] coming of Jesus, but were eyewitnesses

                Lk.1:1,2   Those things which are most surely believed among us... they [told] us, which were...eyewitnesses

                Jn.19:25,26,34,35   He (John) that saw it [Jesus' crucifixion] bare record, & his record is true: & he knoweth that he saith true

                Acts 4:20               We cannot but speak the things which we have seen

                Acts 10:38,39        We are witnesses of all things which He did

                (See also Jn.21:24,25; Acts 5:32; Heb.2:3; 1Jn.1:1-3a.)

B. His resurrection from the dead is a fact:

                Acts 1:2,3              He showed Himself alive after His passion (death) by many infallible proofs, being seen of them 40 days

                Acts 2:31,32          Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses

                Acts 13:30,31        God raised Him (Jesus) from the dead: & He was seen many days of them...His witnesses

                1Cor.15:3-6            He rose again...He was seen of above 500 brethren at once (See also Acts 10:40,41)

C. His resurrection proves that He is divine:

                Rom.1:3,4               Jesus Christ our Lord was...declared to be the Son of God with power...by the resurrection from the dead

 

8. Eyewitness accounts in the Bible tell us that:

A. Jesus was crucified:

                (See Mat.27:27-50; Mk.15:15-37; Lk.23:23-49; Jn.19:16-30.)

B. He was buried in a grave for three days:

                (See Mat.27:57-66; Mk.15:42-47; Lk.23:50-56; Jn.19:31-42; Acts 13:28,29.)

C. He was resurrected from the dead:

                (See Mat.28:1-18; Mk.16:1-14; Lk.24:1-43; Jn.20:all; 21:all; Acts 2:23, 24,32; 3:14,15; 10:39-41; 13:29-31; 1Cor.15:3-8; Rev.1:18.)

D. He was then taken up into Heaven:

9. Old Testament Messianic prophecies:

10. Jesus, the Son of God:

A. The Old Testament states that God has a Son:

                Psa.2:7    The Lord hath said unto Me, Thou art My Son

                Pro.30:4  Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, & what is His Son's name?

                Dan.3:25 I see four men...the fourth is like the Son of God

B. Jesus declared He was the Son of God, Christ the Messiah:

                Mat.16:15-17         Thou art the Christ, the Son of...God. Jesus answered, Blessed art thou...My Father (revealed it unto you)

                Mat.26:63,64          I adjure Thee...tell us whether Thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said

                Mat.27:43b            He said, I am the Son of God (See also Jn.19:7)

                Mk.14:61,62           Art Thou Christ, Son of the Blessed? Jesus said, I am

                Jn.4:25,26               Woman saith...Messias cometh, which is called Christ. Jesus saith, I that speak unto thee am He

D. Even the devils knew He was the Son of God:

E. Jesus called God His Father:

                Jn.5:17,18,20          Jesus...said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God

                Jn.8:54    My Father...of whom ye say, that He is your God

F. God anointed Jesus with power:

                Mk.1:27  With authority commandeth He even the unclean spirits, & they do obey Him

                Lk.4:16-21              Spirit of the Lord is upon Me...He hath anointed Me

                Jn.3:34b  God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto Him

                Acts 10:38             God anointed Jesus...with the Holy Ghost & with power

 

11. Jesus' relationship with God:

A. Jesus' closeness to God, His Father:

                Jn.1:18    The only begotten Son...is in the bosom of the Father

                Jn.16:15  All things that the Father hath are Mine

B. He was with God in His pre-existence in Heaven:

                Jn.17:5,24               The glory which I had with Thee before the world was

                Jn.8:42b  I proceeded forth & came from God...He sent Me

                2Cor.8:9  Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor

C. God loves Jesus & is pleased with Him:

                Mat.3:16,17            This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased

                Jn.8:29b  I do always those things that please Him

D. Jesus is one with His Father:

                Jn.10:30  I & My Father are one

                Jn.10:38b                The Father is in Me, & I in Him

                Jn.14:9,10a             He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father

E. Jesus is God, He is one with the Father:

                Isa.9:6     A child is born...& His name shall be called...the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace

                Jn.8:56-58               Before Abraham was, I am (Compare w/ Exo.3:6,13,14)

                Jn.20:28,29             Thomas said unto Him, "My Lord & my God" [Jesus then commended him for believing]

                Col.3:11  Christ is all, & in all

                1Tim.3:16               God was manifest in the flesh

                Heb.1:8   Unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever

                Rev.1:8,11a; 22:12,13            I am Alpha & Omega, the beginning & the ending...which is, & which was...the Almighty (Compare w/ Isa.44:6)

F. Yet they are distinct, individual personalities:

                1Jn.5:7,8 There are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, & the Holy Ghost: & these three are one

G. God the Father has preeminence:

                Jn.14:28b                My Father is greater than I

                Jn.20:17  I ascend unto My Father, & your Father; & to My God, & your God (See also Eph.1:17)

                1Cor.3:23                Ye are Christ's; & Christ is God's

                1Cor.11:3                The head of Christ is God

                1Cor.15:24-28        Then shall the Son also Himself be subject unto Him... that God may be all in all

H. Jesus' total obedience to the Father:

                Jn.4:34    To do the will of Him that sent Me...finish His work

                Jn.5:19    The Son can do nothing...but what He seeth (God) do

                Jn.5:30    I can of Mine Own self do nothing...I seek not Mine Own will, but the will of the Father

                Jn.8:28,29               I do nothing of Myself...I do always those things that please Him (God)

                Jn.12:49,50             I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father...gave Me a commandment, what I should say...so I speak

                Jn.14:31b                As the Father gave Me commandment, even so I do

                Phi.2:6-8 [Jesus] humbled Himself...obedient unto death

I. Jesus submitted & obeyed utterly:

12. The authority & power God has given Jesus:

A. Jesus is seated on the right hand of God in Heaven:

                Mk.16:19                Was received into Heaven, & sat on right hand of God

                Lk.22:69  Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God (See also Mat.26:64b)

                Rom.8:34                Christ...Who is even at the right hand of God, Who also maketh intercession for us

                Eph.1:20 He raised Him from the dead, & set Him at His Own right hand in the Heavenly places

                Heb.1:3b                He...sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high

                Rev.3:21b               I overcame, & am set down with My Father in His throne

B. God has given all authority to Jesus:

                Mat.28:18               All power (authority) is given unto Me in Heaven & earth

                Dan.7:13,14            There was given Him dominion, & glory & a Kingdom, that all nations...should serve Him (See Heb.1:8)

                Jn.3:35    The Father...hath given all things into His hand

                Jn.5:26,27               He (hath) given (Jesus)...authority to execute judgment

                Eph.1:20-22            Set Him...far above all principality, & power, & might, & dominion...& hath put all things under His feet

                Phi.2:9-11               At the name of Jesus every knee should bow

                Col.2:10  (Jesus) is the head of all principality & power

                1Pet.3:22b              Angels & authorities & powers...made subject to Him

                Rev.17:14               Lord of lords, & King of kings (See also 1Tim.6:15)

C. Jesus is the King, & the Kingdom of Heaven is His:

D. Jesus is Lord:

                Jn.13:13  Ye call me Master & Lord: & ye say well; for so I am

E. God has made Him judge of the world:

                Mat.16:27               The Son of man shall come...& then He shall reward every man according to his works

                Mat.25:31-46         The Son of man...shall...sit on the throne of His glory: & before Him shall be gathered all nations

                Jn.5:22    The Father...hath committed all judgment unto the Son

                Acts 10:42             Ordained of God to be the Judge of (the living) & dead

                Rom.2:16                God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ

F. Jesus will also sit in judgment of Christians:

                Rom.14:10              We shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ

                2Cor.5:10                We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ

                Rev.2:23b               I am He which searcheth the...hearts: & I will give unto every one of you according to your works

                Rev.22:12               My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be

 

13. Jesus the Creator:

A. God created the universe through Jesus:

                Jn.1:1-3,10              In the beginning was the Word (Jesus)...& all things were made by Him...the world was made by Him

                Gen.1:1   In the beginning, God created the heaven & the earth

                Col.1:15,16             By Him (Jesus) were all things created...all things were created by Him, & for Him

                Heb.1:2   His Son...by Whom also He made the worlds

                Heb.1.8,10              Unto the Son He saith...Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth

B. Jesus upholds all matter in the universe:

                Col.1:17  He is before all things, & by Him all things consist

                Heb.1:3   Upholding all things by the word of His power

C. All the fullness of God dwells in Jesus:

                Col.1:19  That in Him (Jesus) should all fulness dwell

                Col.2:2b,3               Christ...in Whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom & knowledge

                Col.2:9    In Him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead

D. A description of Jesus' immortal resurrected body:

                Rev.1:13-17            The Son of man...eyes as a flame of fire...countenance as the sun [skin glowed like white-hot metal]
