The Holy Spirit



1. The Holy Spirit's part in our salvation:

A. We must be born of & made alive by the Spirit:

                Jn.16:8,9 [The Holy Spirit reproves & convicts men of their sin]

                Jn.3:5-8   Except a man be born of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God

                Jn.6:63    It is the Spirit that quickeneth (gives life)

                Tit.3:5     He saved us by the washing of regeneration, & renewing of the Holy Ghost

B. A measure of God's Spirit is given to us when we're saved:

                2Cor.1:22                Who hath sealed us, & given us the earnest (deposit) of the Spirit

                Eph.1:13,14            After ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit

                Eph.4:30 The Holy Spirit, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption

C. The Holy Spirit assures us that we are saved:

                Rom.8:16                Spirit beareth witness that we are children of God

                1Jn.3:24b                We know He abideth in us, by the Spirit

                1Jn.4:13  Hereby know we that...He (dwelleth) in us, because He hath given us of His Spirit

D. The Holy Spirit testifies Jesus is the truth; "Blasphemy against the Spirit" means rejecting the Spirit's witness:

                Jn.15:26  The Spirit of truth...shall testify of Me (Jesus)

                Jn.16:14  He (the Spirit) shall glorify Me

                Mk.3:28,29             He that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness (See also Mat.12:31-32)


2. The baptism (or overflowing) of the Holy Spirit:

A. Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit:

                Mat.3:11 He (Jesus) shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost

                Lk.24:49  I send the promise of My Father upon you ...ye [shall] be endued (clothed) with power from on high

                Jn.7:38,39               Out of his belly flow rivers of living water... the Spirit

                Jn.14:16  I will pray the Father & He shall give you (a) Comforter

                Jn.16:7    I will send Him (the Comforter) unto you

                Acts 2:1-4              [Spirit poured out on Christians on day of Pentecost]

B. When Christians receive the baptism of the Spirit:

                Acts 8:15-17          [Samaritans baptised with the Spirit after salvation]

                Acts 19:2               Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? They said, We have not

                Acts 10:44-46        [Cornelius' household was filled with the Holy Spirit at the same time they received Jesus]

C. Receiving the Holy Spirit:

                Acts 19:1,2            Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?

                Lk.11:9-13              If ye know how to give good gifts...how much more shall (God) give Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?

                1Cor.6:19                Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost (See also 1Cor.3:16)

                Eph.5:18b               Be filled with the Spirit

D. The Spirit is often given by "laying on of hands":

                Acts 8:15-17          [Peter & John laid hands on the Samaritan believers]

                Acts 19:6               [Paul laid hands on the Ephesian believers]


3. The purpose of the Holy Spirit baptism:

A. The Holy Spirit anoints us with power to witness:

                Acts 1:8 Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you & ye shall be witnesses unto Me

                Lk.4:18    The Spirit of the Lord hath anointed me to preach the gospel (See also Isa.61:1,2)

                Jn.15:26  The Spirit of truth...shall testify of Me (Jesus)

                Acts 4:29,31          They were filled with the Holy Ghost & spake the Word of God with boldness

                Acts 5:32               Ye are His witnesses, & so is also the Holy Ghost

                Mic.3:8   I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord...to declare to Israel his sin

B. Transforms us into a new person:

                1Sam.10:6               The Spirit will come upon thee, and thou shalt...be  turned into another man

                Psa.51:10-13          [Creates a clean heart & a right spirit]

C. Gives us a closer relationship with Jesus:

                Eph.5:18,19            Be filled with the Spirit...singing & making melody in your heart to the Lord

D. Minding the things of the Spirit brings life & peace:

                Rom.8:5-7               They that are after the Spirit mind things of the Spirit

                Gal.5:16,17             Walk in the Spirit, & ye shall not fulfil lust of the flesh

E. The Spirit brings forth virtues in our lives:

                Gal.5:22,23             The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace [etc.]

                Rom.5:5  The love of God is shed in our hearts by Holy Ghost

                Rom.14:17              Righteousness & peace & joy in the Holy Ghost

                Rom.15:13              Abound in hope through power of the Holy Ghost

                1Cor.12:4-11          [The Spirit gives us different kinds of spiritual gifts]

F. The Holy Spirit comforts us:

                Jn.14:16,26             The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost

                Jn.16:7    I will send (the Comforter) unto you

                Acts 9:31b             Walking in the comfort of the Holy Ghost

                Rom.8:1  There is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk...after the Spirit

                1Pet.4:14                If ye be reproached, happy are ye; for the Spirit of God resteth upon you

G. The Holy Spirit & prayer:

                Rom.8:26,27           We know not what we should pray for...but the Spirit  maketh intercession for us according to will of God

                Jude 20   Building up yourselves...praying in the Holy Ghost

H. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth:

                Jn.16:13b                When the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth

                1Jn.5:6b  The Spirit beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth

4. Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

A. The Spirit gives us wisdom & guidance:

                Mk.13:11                It is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost

                Lk.12:11,12             The Holy Ghost shall teach you...what ye ought to say

                Jn.14:26b                Holy Ghost shall teach you all things & bring all things to your remembrance (See also 1Jn.2:27)

                Jn.16:13a                The Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth

                1Cor.2:9,10             God hath revealed them to us by His Spirit...yea, the deep things of God

                1Cor.2:12                We have received the Spirit that we might know the  things that are freely given to us of God

                1Cor.2:13                We speak words which the Holy Ghost teacheth

                1Cor.12:8                [The Spirit gives word of wisdom, word of knowledge]

                Eph.1:17 May God give you the spirit of wisdom & revelation

                2Tim.1:13,14          Hold fast sound words...keep by the Holy Ghost

B. The Holy Spirit gives us the gift of prophecy:

                1Cor.12:7a,10         To one is given by the Spirit...prophecy

                Jn.16:13b                Spirit of truth will show you things to come

                Acts 2:17,18          I will pour out of My Spirit...your sons & your daughters shall prophesy (See also Joel 2:28,29.)

                2Pet.1:21                Prophecy came...[when] men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost

C. The Holy Spirit gives us discernment:

                Isa.11:2,3                The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him...he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes

                1Cor.2:12-15          [We have received the Spirit of God and can spiritually discern matters]

                1Cor.12:10              [Gives gift of discernment of spirits] (Also 1Jn.4:1-6)

D. The Spirit gives faith, healing & miracles:

                1Cor.12:9                To another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by same Spirit

                1Cor.12:10              To another the working of miracles

E. The Spirit leads & checks (restrains) us:

                Acts 8:29               [Specific directions:] The Spirit said to Philip

                Acts 16:6,7            [Restrains:] The Spirit suffered (permitted) them not

                Rom.8:14                As many as are led by Spirit of God are sons of God

                Isa.30:21 [Spirit says:] This is the way; walk ye in it

F. The gift of tongues:

                Acts 2:1-4              Spoke with other tongues as Spirit gave them utterance

                1Cor.12:10              To another interpretation of tongues (See 1Cor.14:13)

                1Cor.12:10,11         To another diverse kinds of tongues...all these worketh the Spirit

                1Cor.13:1                Speak with the tongues of men & of angels

                1Cor.14:2                He that speaketh in an unknown tongue...in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries

                1Cor.14:4                He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth (strengthens) himself

G. God's Spirit strengthens us:

                Eph.3:16 Be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man

                (See also Judg.14:6,19; 15:14,15 about Samson.)


5. Freedom of the Holy Spirit:

                2Cor.3:17b             Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty

                Rom.8:2  The law of the Spirit...hath made me free from the law of sin & death

                Rom.8:15                Ye have not received the spirit of bondage to fear, but the Spirit of adoption

                Gal.5:18  If ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law

                2Tim.1:7 God hath (given) us the Spirit of power, of love & of a sound mind


6. The Holy Spirit inspires unity of believers:

                Acts 4:31,32          They were all filled with the Holy Ghost...& the multitude were of one heart, & of one soul

                1Cor.12:13              By the Spirit are we all baptized into one body

                2Cor.13:14              The communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all


7. Other points about the ministry of the Spirit:

                Acts 8:17-20          [The Holy Spirit cannot be bought; it's a gift]

                Acts 20:28             Feed the flock...Holy Ghost hath made you overseers

                Rom.8:11                He shall quicken (make alive, resurrect) your bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you


8. Obeying the Holy Spirit:

A. The Holy Spirit is given to the obedient:

                Pro.1:23  Turn at My reproof, I will pour out My Spirit unto you

                Acts 5:32               The Holy Ghost, Whom God hath given to them that obey Him

B. Obey the Spirit once you are Spirit-filled:

                Gal.5:25  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit

                1Pet.1:22                Seeing that ye obey the truth through the Spirit... see that ye love one another

                Rev.2:29 Hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches

C. Warnings to obey the Spirit & not resist it:

                Rom.8:5-6               [Living according to Spirit is life & peace; being carnally minded causes death]

                1Cor.2:14                The natural (carnal) man receiveth not the things of the Spirit, for they are foolishness unto him

                Eph.4:29,30            Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, grieve not the Holy Spirit

                1Thes.5:19             Quench not the Spirit

                Heb.3:7-10             The Holy Ghost saith, Harden not your hearts

D. Results of resisting the Holy Spirit:

                Gen.6:3a My Spirit shall not always strive with man

                Isa.63:10 They rebelled & vexed (grieved) His Holy Spirit, therefore He...fought against them

                Acts 7:51-53          Ye do always resist the Holy Ghost [resulting in them persecuting the prophets & disobeying God]

                Acts 20:22,23        [Paul ignored the Spirit's warnings, resulting in impris onment & finally being beheaded--See also 21:10-14]


9. The Holy Spirit in Jesus' life:

                Mat.1:18 (Mary was with child of the Holy Ghost); Mat.1:20       (Jesus was conceived of the Holy Ghost); Lk.3:21,22 (Holy Ghost anointed Him); Lk.4:1 (Jesus' ministry began with Him being full of the Holy Ghost); Acts 10:38 (God anointed Jesus with Holy Ghost & power); Jn.3:34b (God gave Him the Spirit without measure); Lk.4:1 (Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness); Mat.12:28 (He cast out devils by the Spirit); Rom.8:11; 1Pet.3:18 (The Spirit raised Jesus from the dead).


10. Other Bible examples:

A. Examples of being filled with the Holy Spirit:

                Exo.31:2-5 (Bezaleel); 1Sam.10:6,9,10 (Saul); 1Sam.16:13 (David); Lk.1:15 (John the Baptist); Lk.1:41,42 (Elizabeth); Lk.1:67 (Zacharias); Lk.2:25,26 (Simeon); Lk.4:1 (Jesus); Acts 2:1-4; (Christians on the day of Pentecost); Acts 6:3-5,7 (Early church deacons); Acts 9:17 (Paul); Acts 11:22-24 (Barnabus anointed to teach).

B. The Spirit's anointing of power in time of need:

                Acts 4:8 (Peter anointed to preach); Acts 4:29-31 (Early church prayed during persecution & was filled); Acts 7:55 (Stephen's witness); Acts 13:9-11 (The Spirit empowered Paul to smite the sorcerer with blindness); Acts 13:50-52 (Persecuted disciples were filled with the Holy Ghost).
